DWU athletics offers support for flood victims

MITCHELL, S.D. – When disaster struck the Mitchell community two weeks ago, the Dakota Wesleyan University athletic teams took it upon themselves to help clean up and restore hope to businesses and families of the surrounding area.

 Among the numerous projects done following the flooding, the DWU baseball and men's soccer teams spent time filling and delivering sand bags to numerous locations throughout the Mitchell area. They also spent time on Friday in Alexandria helping move furniture out of basements of houses.

 In addition, the men's soccer team went to local businesses to take out flooring and walls, while also organizing damaged products. The women's soccer team joined in and helped move furniture and clean out basements in houses in Mitchell and Alexandria.

 The men's basketball team helped in Mitchell by carrying furniture out of local community members' basements, tearing up carpet and sheet rock while removing water. The women's basketball, wrestling and golf teams volunteered their time filling sand bags and helping Klock Werks move and repair some of their equipment. They, along with football, spent a considerable amount of their time at Prestige Nail Salon cleaning the inside of the building.

 Meanwhile, the track and field and cross-country teams volunteered by moving furniture out of local houses and into trailers and trucks to be unloaded into storage facilities.

 "This is a perfect example of how special our community is," Director of Athletics Jon Hart commented. "Mitchell and the surrounding communities supports this University in countless ways, and our programs are always eager to return the favor. I want to extend a heartfelt thanks to our teams, coaches and campus community for rallying to help those in need."
