Tiger baseball opens season at No. 10 Tabor College

HILLSBORO, Kan. – The Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team opened its regular season on Saturday, taking on No. 10 Tabor College in Hillsboro, Kan.
In game one, Tabor quickly jumped on DWU, plating 12 runs in five innings. The game ended in the sixth after the Bluejays put up a four spot to seal the victory 16-1. Senior Patrick Whetham (Garretson, S.D.) took the loss after tossing four innings, allowing eight hits, five earned runs, while giving up three walks and striking out three. The Tiger offense scattered five hits, led by newcomer Colten Boudreau (St. Clement, Manitoba, Canada) with a triple, while Jared Neilan (Pierre, S.D.) and Brody Kunzmann (Sioux Falls, S.D.) added a double.
The final game on Saturday featured both teams scoring in the first inning, but Tabor quickly answered with six runs in third to put the Tigers out of reach giving the Bluejays a 13-2 victory. Dillon Campbell (Ashland, Neb.) took the loss on the hill after throwing three and a third innings, allowing 11 hits, five earned runs and two walks. Senior catcher Tramane Moore (Los Banos, Calif.) went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Sunday was a different story for DWU as they held Tabor in check in game one. After tying the game at one in the third, Tabor escaped with a 5-1 victory, aided by two errors from the Tiger defense.
Steven Somerville (Ajax, Toronto, Canada) took the loss after tossing six innings, allowing four runs on eight hits, while walking three and striking out five. Senior Peyton Price (Norfolk, Neb.) went 2-for-3, while Zach Uttecht (Pierce, Neb.) added an RBI after going 1-for-3 at the plate.
In the finale, the Tigers were down early 3-0, but a five-run fourth inning was enough as DWU topped Tabor 7-5. Moore was 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI after tallying his first home run of the year. Tyler Waddle (Huron, S.D.) was 2-for-3 with an RBI and homer, while junior college transfer Branden Oropeza (San Francisco, Calif.) also added a home run, going 1-for-3 with a run and three RBIs. Price went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a double.
Nathen Smith (Altona, Manitoba, Canada) picked up his first win of 2017, tossing five innings, giving up four runs on eight hits, while striking out three and walking one. Senior Will Lutjen (Miller Place, N.Y.) picked up his first save of 2017 after throwing two innings, allowing an earned run on two hits, while striking out two.
DWU will travel south to compete in the Tucson Invitational, taking on Presentation College at 9 a.m. in Tucson, Ariz.
