Tigers split in GPAC action with Hastings

HASTINGS, Neb. – The Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team opened Great Plains Athletic Conference play on Saturday afternoon, despite a rain delay against Hastings College at Duncan Field in Hastings, Neb.
In Game One, the Tigers tallied three runs, thanks to a Jared Neilan (Pierre, S.D.) triple that started the inning. Peyton Price (Norfolk, Neb.) singled to right later in the inning to score Neilan, while catcher Tramane Moore (Los Banos, Calif.) singled to center to plate two more runs for DWU.
DWU went on to add a run in the fourth and three more in the seventh to defeat the Broncos 7-4. In the seventh, the Tigers added a few insurance runs when Neilan hit a double to deep center that scored two. Later in the inning, Branden Oropeza (San Francisco, Calif.) singled to left to bring around Neilan.
Senior William Lutjen (Miller Place, N.Y.) picked up his third save of the season in the ninth. Freshman Dominique Boerger (Milbank, S.D.) picked up his second win in a Tiger uniform, tossing six innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits, while striking out three and walking one.
Game Two was a complete pitcher's dual, however, Hastings (12-10, 1-1 GPAC) loaded the bases in the ninth and took Game Two from the Tigers 2-1 on a walk-off base on balls.
Senior Patrick Whetham (Garretson, S.D.) kept Hastings in check the entire game, tossing eight innings, allowing no runs on two hits, while striking out six and walking two.
The lone Tiger run came in the top of the seventh when Moore singled to center that scored pinch-runner Reed Harter (Colome, S.D.).
Oropeza went 2-for-3 at the plate with a walk, while Moore was 1-for-5 with an RBI.
The Tigers (6-11, 1-1 GPAC) battle Doane University for a GPAC doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday in Crete, Neb.
