MITCHELL, S.D. – Freshman Dom Boerger (Milbank, S.D.) made his presence known on Saturday afternoon as the Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team swept Briar Cliff University in Great Plains Athletic Conference action at Cadwell Park in Mitchell, S.D.
Needing just 74 pitches, Boerger carved through the Charger (11-20, 4-5 GPAC) lineup. The freshman tossed seven innings, allowing no earned runs on three hits, while striking out six in the seven-inning affair.
The Tiger offense exploded for 10 runs in the first game, recording two in the second, four in the third and three in the fourth, while adding a security run in the bottom of the sixth to take Game One 10-0.
Tramane Moore (Los Banos, Calif.), Brody Kunzmann (Sioux Falls, S.D.) and Hartman Katz (Huron, S.D.) had two RBIs, while Zach Uttecht (Pierce, Neb.) and Kunzmann each added a double.
Game Two was no different for the Tigers as they recorded 13 hits in the finale. DWU went on to defeat Briar Cliff 12-5, backed by a pair of homeruns from Uttecht and Neilan. Moore added three hits at the plate and three RBI, including a pair of doubles, while Jimi Williams (Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada) added a triple. Branden Oropeza (San Francisco, Calif.) went 3-for-4 in the nine-inning contest.
Senior Patrick Whetham (Garretson, S.D.) picked up the win, tossing seven innings, allowing three earned runs on 11 hits, while striking out five and walking one.
The Tigers (9-14, 4-4 GPAC) return to action taking on Midland University for a GPAC doubleheader tilt at 1 p.m. Sunday in Mitchell.
