Early runs propel Cougars over DWU

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team stepped out of conference play on Tuesday to take on the University of Sioux Falls at the Birdcage in Sioux Falls, S.D.
USF was able to use a six-run first inning, followed by a run in the second and four in the third to put the Tigers at bay as the game ended due to run rule 14-2 in the seventh inning.
The lone two runs for the Tigers came in the top of the sixth inning when Reed Harter (Colome, S.D.) doubled to center field that drove in Jimi Williams (Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada) and JT Miller (Sioux Falls, S.D.)
Harter went 3-for-3 at the plate, including two doubles, a stolen base and two RBIs. Senior Zach Uttecht (Pierce, Neb.) added two hits, while Tyler Waddle (Huron, S.D.) recorded a double. Nathen Smith (Altona, Manitoba, Canada) suffered the loss after tossing two and two-thirds innings, allowing seven earned runs off 11 hits, while striking out two and walking three.
The Tigers (11-15, 6-4 GPAC) continue Great Plains Athletic Conference play as they visit Northwestern College for a doubleheader at 4 p.m. Thursday in Orange City, Iowa.
