DWU baseball splits GPAC doubleheader
MITCHELL, S.D. – After taking the top spot in the Great Plains Athletic Conference standings, the Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team took Game One from Northwestern College 8-4, but dropped the finale 10-6 in a GPAC doubleheader on Saturday at Cadwell Park in Mitchell, S.D.

MITCHELL, S.D. – After taking the top spot in the Great Plains Athletic Conference standings, the Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team took Game One from Northwestern College 8-4, but dropped the finale 10-6 in a GPAC doubleheader on Saturday at Cadwell Park in Mitchell, S.D.
The Tigers ran out to a six-run lead after five innings, but the Red Raiders added three in the top of the sixth and another in the seventh, but it wasn't enough as DWU held on for victory.
Senior Peyton Price (Norfolk, Neb.) had one of his best days at the plate in his final campaign, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs, a run and a double. Tyler Waddle (Huron, S.D.) added a double with an RBI.
Right-handed hurler Steven Somerville (Ajax, Toronto, Canada) threw five innings to earn the win after allowing three earned runs on five hits, while striking out three and walking one.
Game Two was a different story for the Tigers, after the Red Raiders tallied six runs in the top of the fifth to take a 7-2 lead. However, DWU didn't go down without a fight by recording four runs in the bottom of the ninth.
Uttecht added two more hits in five at-bats and an RBI, while Jared Neilan (Pierre, S.D.) went 2-for-5 with a run, a double and an RBI. Fellow senior Sean Riley (Driggs, Idaho) added two hits and an RBI in the loss.
Dillon Stadlman (Parkston, S.D.) was tagged with the loss after tossing four and one-third innings, allowing seven earned runs off eight hits, while striking out seven and walking one.
The Tigers (14-16, 9-5 GPAC) step out of conference play to welcome Mayville State University for a doubleheader on Tuesday at Cadwell Park in Mitchell. Time will be announced at a later date.
