MITCHELL, S.D. – Sophomore pitcher Dominique Boerger (Milbank, S.D.) set a career-high with 14 strikeouts in the first game of a doubleheader against Dordt College in a Great Plains Athletic Conference matchup. DWU fell to Dordt in the first game, 3-1, but defeated the Defenders, 11-2 in the second game Friday at Drake Field in Mitchell.
In the first game, pitchers of both teams found their groove early as neither team scored in the first five innings. Boerger struck out three batters in a row during the third inning, and struck out seven-of-nine batters he faced from the third inning through the fifth inning.
Wes Anderson (Duluth, Minn.) gave life to the Tigers (7-14, 3-5 GPAC) as he nailed a homerun over the left-field fence to put DWU up, 1-0. However, the Defenders (4-12, 1-5 GPAC) tied the game in the top of the seventh after a one-run double. Dordt was able to put up two runs in the eighth inning to take game one from DWU.
Anderson notched the only two hits for the Tigers as he finished the game 2-for-2 with a homerun and an RBI. Boerger pitched seven innings, struck out 14 batters and only allowed one earned run.
In the second game, the Defenders took a 1-0 lead after the first inning. It didn't take long for DWU to erase the deficit, as Kyle Bailey (Brandon, S.D.) knocked a two-run single into left field. Next up, Anderson doubled into center field, bringing home another run. DWU added three more runs in the third inning to extend its lead to 8-1.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Reed Harter (Colome, S.D.) smacked a single into center field, bringing a run home. Moments later, two more runs came home after an error, allowing the Tigers to run away from the Defenders. Bailey finished the game 1-for-3 with three RBIs, while Harter went 1-for-2 with two RBIs. Gunnar Johnson (Gresham, Ore.) pitched five innings and struck out six batters.
The Tigers return to the diamond for a GPAC doubleheader against Dordt at 3 p.m. Monday in Sioux Center, Iowa.
