SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – After having the games postponed two days, the Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team played Dordt College in a Great Plains Athletic Conference doubleheader as DWU took game one, 5-1 and dropped game two, 6-2 Monday in Sioux Center, Iowa.
It was a pitchers' duel in the first game as each pitcher threw five scoreless innings. However, it was the Tigers (8-15, 4-6 GPAC) who scored first in the sixth inning. Branden Oropeza (San Francisco, Calif.) singled into right field, bringing home the first run of the game. Later in the inning, Kyle Bailey (Brandon, S.D.) brought Wes Anderson (Duluth, Minn.) home to help the Tigers take a 3-0 lead.
The Defenders (5-13, 2-6 GPAC) cut into the DWU lead after a homerun in the bottom of the sixth. But, the Tigers plated two more runs in the top of the seventh inning to down the Defenders in the first game. Oropeza finished the game 1-for-3 with an RBI, while Reed Harter (Colome, S.D.) went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Gavin Reichmuth (Chandler, Ariz.) went the distance as he pitched seven innings, sturck out two batters and allowed only one earned run.
In the second game, DWU took an early 2-0 lead after Oropeza smacked a two-run double into center field. The lead was short lived as Dordt added two runs in the bottom of the first inning to tie the game. In the bottom of the second, the Defenders added three runs to take a 5-2 lead. Both teams did not add another run until the sixth inning when Dordt scored a run to secure the 6-2 victory over DWU.
Oropeza went 1-for-3 with two RBIs, as Anderson finished 1-for-1 and Jerrod Zens (Alexandria, S.D.) went 1-for-2 at the plate. Hunter Christopherson (Vermillion, S.D.) was tabbed with the loss as he pitched one and two-third innings, striking out two batters and allowing five earned runs.
The Tigers are scheduled to host Mount Marty College in a GPAC doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. tomorrow at Cadwell Field in Mitchell.
