MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team dropped two games against Morningside College 6-1 in the first game, and 7-4 in the second game in a Great Plains Athletic Conference showdown Wednesday in Mitchell.
In game one, the Mustangs (18-21-1, 12-10 GPAC) jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning. The Tigers (10-25, 6-16 GPAC) answered as they cut the deficit to one with a sacrifice fly from Reed Harter (Colome, S.D.) that scored Wes Anderson (Duluth, MN.) to make the score 2-1 in favor of the Mustangs.
That would be all of the scoring for DWU, as Morningside added a grand slam in the top of the second inning as Morningside won game one.
Colton Boudreau (Manitoba, Canada) finished 1-for-3 with a double. Gunnar Johnson (Gresham, Ore) came in relief in the third inning giving up no runs through four innings of work. Cayden Veland (Sioux Falls, S.D.) finished the game giving up no hits in one inning pitched.
In game two, Morningside once again struck first with a three-run top of the first inning. But the Tiger offense got things going in the fourth inning with an RBI single from Boudreau and another RBI single from Brody Kunzmann (Sioux Falls, S.D) to cut the Mustang lead in half, 4-2.
DWU continued to fight back with two more runs in the top of the sixth inning to tie the ball game four apiece. But Morningside put the game away in the top of the seventh with back-to-back homeruns as they went on to win game two.
Boudreau went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored, as Kunzmann finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Steven Sagasty (Pacifica, Calif.) pitched the complete game as he struck out four batters and gave up six earned runs.
The Tigers take on Concordia University in a GPAC doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday in Seward, Neb.
