MITCHELL, S.D. – After a three-run homerun from Reed Harter (Colome, S.D.) tied the game in the seventh inning, the Dakota Wesleyan University baseball fell to University of Jamestown 4-3 in a Great Plains Athletic Conference matchup Tuesday in Mitchell.
The game began as a pitching duel as the Tigers (11-16, 5-7 GPAC) and Jimmies (18-10, 8-4 GPAC) were held in check offensively. In the fourth inning, Jamestown loaded the bases with zero outs. But, starting pitcher Ethan Davis (Billings, Mont.) got out of the jam, striking out two batters and got a ground ball to Wes Anderson (Duluth, Minn.) who stepped on second base to end the scoring threat.
In the sixth inning, after a single to right field, Jamestown broke the scoring drought with a two-run homerun to take a 2-0 lead. Moments later, the Jimmies recorded an RBI-double to take a 3-0 lead into the final inning of play.
DWU wasted no time in the top of the seventh inning, after singles from Drew DeMers (Winner, S.D.) and Chandler Bakley (Martin, S.D.). Harter cranked a three-run homerun over the left field fence to tie the game at 3-3.
In the bottom half of the inning, Jamestown would once again create a scoring threat. After a ground ball to the shortstop gave the Tigers the first out of the inning, the Jimmies next batter hit a ground ball up the middle that leaked into the outfield to bring home the game-winning run on a walk-off single to end the game.
Harter finished with two hits and three RBIs and a homerun. DeMers and Bakley also collected singles for DWU. Davis faced 28 batters and pitched 5.2 innings, giving up three earned runs while striking out six batters.
The Tigers will continue GPAC play against Northwestern College at 1 p.m. Saturday in Orange City, Iowa.
