Tigers sweep four-game series with Hastings
HASTINGS, Neb. – The Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team has found themselves in the middle of a six-game winning streak following four-consecutive wins against Hastings College. DWU now sits in third place of the Great Plains Athletic Conference following the trip to Hastings, Neb., on Sunday and Monday.

HASTINGS, Neb. – The Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team has found themselves in the middle of a six-game winning streak following four-consecutive wins against Hastings College. DWU now sits in third place of the Great Plains Athletic Conference following the trip to Hastings, Neb., on Sunday and Monday.
In the opening game, neither team could get a run across home plate until the Tigers (18-17, 12-8 GPAC) did so in the fourth inning. Following a wild throw, Kalub Carmichael (Howard, S.D.) reached home to give DWU a 1-0 lead.
In the next inning, Chandler Bakley (Martin, S.D.) singled to right field to bring Drew DeMers (Winner, S.D.) home. Two more runners scored later in the inning after batters were walked with the bases loaded.
The Tigers opened the game in the sixth inning when Landon Neugebauer (Mitchell, S.D.) scored on a wild throw by the Broncos (7-25, 2-17 GPAC). Two batters later, Bakley singled to left-center field to bring Jerrod Zens (Alexandria, S.D.) home. Tyler Torres (Novato, Calif.) capped off the inning with a two-run shot to left field to push the Tigers to an 8-0 victory.
Bakley finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs, while Torres went 1-for-2 with a pair of runs batted in. Cole Gassman (Canova, S.D.) recorded the other RBI. On the mound, Dominique Boerger (Milbank, S.D.) picked up the win as he went the distance, striking out five batters and allowing no runs to secure the shutout.
The second game began quickly with a seven-run opening frame for the Tigers. Kyle Bailey (Brandon, S.D.) smacked a shot to shallow right field to bring Wes Anderson (Duluth, Minn.) home for the score. Moments later, Reed Harter (Colome, S.D.) singled down the left-field line to bring two runs home. Joseph Hanisch (Hartford, S.D.) finished the inning with a two-run single to extend the Tiger lead.
Two frames later following a bases-loaded walk, Harter singled again to bring Neugebauer home to push the DWU lead to nine runs. Gavin Reichmuth (Chandler, Ariz.) and the Tiger fielding kept Hastings at bay throughout as they held the Broncos scoreless for a second-straight game.
Harter finished with three runs batted in on three hits, while Bailey went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs. Hanisch tallied two RBIs, as DeMers added a run scored. Reichmuth notched a pair of strikeouts, allowed seven hits and did not allow any runs.
Both teams kicked off the third game of the series with a two-run second inning. After the Broncos took a 2-0 lead, Cameron Quigley (Newcastle, Wyo.) scored on a Hastings error. One batter later, Anderson connected on an RBI single to center field.
Neither team could break the tie as the game headed to the bottom of the seventh frame still deadlocked, 2-2. However, Zens ended the game with a walk-off single to left field to give the Tigers a 3-2 victory.
Anderson finished 3-for-3 with an RBI, while Zens tallied the other RBI. Gunnar Johnson (Gresham, Ore.) picked up the victory on the mound as he struck out three batters and allowed just three hits.
In the final game of the series, Harter kicked off the game with an RBI to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the first inning. However, Hastings notched three runs in the next frame to take a 3-1 lead.
DWU responded an inning later as Harter nailed a two-run single and DeMers bunted to score Harter as the Tigers regained the lead, 5-3. Following a DeMers RBI single in the fifth inning, Zens connected on a two-run single to shallow right-center field. Later in the sixth frame, Harter singled to right field, bringing Anderson home, helping the Tigers secure their sixth win in a row.
Zens collected three RBIs, while Harter finished 2-for-3 with three runs batted in and a pair of runs scored. DeMers went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and Anderson finished with three runs scored. Ethan Davis (Billings, Mont.) picked up the win on the mound as he struck out four batters and allowed five earned runs.
The Tigers return home to host Doane University at 5 p.m. Friday in Mitchell, S.D.
