Local standout, Larson, headlines baseball recruiting class for 2020 season
MITCHELL, S.D. – With recruits stretching from Texas, to Washington and local talents from right here in South Dakota, the Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team is excited to announce the first wave of signees for the recruiting class of 2020.
MITCHELL, S.D. – With recruits stretching from Texas, to Washington and local talents from right here in South Dakota, the Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team is excited to announce the first wave of signees for the recruiting class of 2020.
Koby Larson is one of the top recruits and stays right at home and he joins the Tigers from Mitchell High School. Currently, he leads the South Dakota Class 'A' with a .400 batting average and with 14 runs batted in. He also ranks fourth in the class in the on base & slugging percentage category. Other stats from this season include 20 runs scored, three saves on the mound with a 0.00 ERA, eight strikeouts and three saves, along with a .947 fielding percentage.
Larson led his team during his junior campaign with a 2.1 ERA, while averaging a .308 batting average, .469 on-base percentage and a .941 fielding percentage. He is also a member of the National Honor Society and plays baseball for the Mitchell Post 18.
Michael Dameron is another recruit for the Tigers out of Fort Worth, Texas. Dameron was an All-League Second Team Pitcher for the Lions who finished with an ERA of 0.39. The 5-foot-11 pitcher is also a member of the DWU football team.
DWU added another pitcher with Kieren Luellman from Yankton, S.D. He won the Yankton Cy Young Award three times in his career. He finished with a regular season ERA of 0.00 and a postseason ERA of 1.135. In 37 innings pitched, Luellman tallied 33 strikeouts. He also was a member of the National Honor Society and was a Merit Honor Roll Member for four years.
Wyatt Hunt joins the DWU baseball team for the 2020 season from Rapid City, S.D. He is a dual-threat player who can play any position from catcher, to first base, to the outfield. He is an aggressive hitter that puts the ball in play often.
The Tigers bulk up their infield with a junior transfer in Justin Rodriguez from Island Park, New York. His last school attended was SUNY Ulster where he played multiple positions. He was labeled as a gap-to-gap hitter who is versatile and can play multiple positions when called upon.
Preston Hanson is another transfer as he comes to DWU from Skagit Valley College in Mount Vernon, Wash. The 6-foot-6 pitcher has the ability to throw in the low to mid 80's, with good command of the pitching zone.
Hugo Garcia-Gaytan is a junior transfer from Cedar Valley College, where he played catcher. He has an average pop time of 1.94 seconds to second base and has an ability to make contact every appearance at the plate. He will give the Tigers options at the catcher position and a solid bat in the lineup.
Other members of the recruiting class include Zackary Satterwhite, Trenton Tyree, Jalen Winegar, Cade Gemar, Noah Ryan, Isaac Prell, Jacob Scully, John Zerr, Jereko Martinez and Carsen Goodman.
