TIGERS EARN SEASON SWEEP OVER VIKINGS BEHIND MEYERS BIG DAY AT THE PLATE AND QUALITY STARTING PITCHING
Mitchell, S.D. –
The Dakota Wesleyan baseball team hosted the Valley City State University Vikings for some non-conference action. DWU came away with both wins led by Caleb Meyers who went 5-6 for the day with five runs and three RBIs. Jacob Glovich struck out nine batters in game one and Dexter Payne struck out four in the second contest with Logan Davis coming in for the save.
How It Happened –
Tigers jumped to a 2-0 lead behind a pair of doubles from Caleb Meyers and Seth Christiansen in the bottom of the first. DWU was able to keep the Vikings off the score board after a big double play in the first inning and Drew Kitchens making a big play in second. The Valley City State Viking would put up three runs behind an error by the Tigers infielders. Down 3-2 in the bottom of the third, the Tigers would go back to Meyers. Meyers would smoke the ball deep into right field and used his speed to get to third. Pravecek would get his first hit of the game with a double down the left line, allowing Meyers to score his third run of the day and taking the lead back, 4-3. After Jacob Glovich and the Tiger infield put away three Vikings in the top of the sixth, the Tigers added one more run on the board after Meyers stole home. DWU came out of game one with the 5-3 win.
Game two the Tigers grabbed another quick 2-0 lead. Pravecek singled up the left side and this allowed Lane Darrow and Meyers to score the first runs of the game. Just like game one, neither team was able to get a run across the dish in the second inning. The Vikings got their first run on the board in the third off a single to right center.
After a quiet third and a stop in the fourth, the Tigers got two more runners in position to score. Michael Zeman singled out the left side and earned two RBI's sending Carter Olek and Joseph Tharaldson home. The third run of the inning would be scored by Meyers after a fielder's choice allowed Lane Darrow to get to first base. DWU kept piling up the runs thanks to Meyers hitting another double into the left field and sent Darrow all the way across the dish to score, making it 6-1 before a ground out would end the inning. The Vikings and Tigers traded one run apiece in the fifth and sixth. Carter Olek smashed a solo home run over the left field fence and Meyers hit a double to get Darrow home, giving DWU an 8-3 lead.
The Tigers had a commanding lead and only needed three outs to close out the sweep of the Vikings. VCSU had two runners on when their second baseman stepped up and homered into left field, making it a two run contest. Logan Davis stepped to the mound for the Tigers and was able to get the save for the Tigers as he caught the final batter looking. DWU swept the Vikings after taking game two, 8-6.
