ORANGE CITY, Iowa – Five Dakota Wesleyan University men's basketball players scored in double figures and senior forward Kris Menning (Corsica, S.D.) tallied his 1,000th-career point as the Tigers held off Northwestern College in a Great Plains Athletic Conference matchup Wednesday in Orange City, Iowa.
The Tigers (25-3, 15-3 GPAC) shot an even 50 percent from the field, but let a 10-point halftime lead evaporate before putting away the Red Raiders 93-86 to stay atop the GPAC standings.
Like he has so many times in his career, Menning raised up from beyond the 3-point line in the first half to drill a shot to give him his 1,000th point as a Tiger. He finished with 18 points, including a pair of 3-pointers and hit 12-of-14 free throws.
The Tigers were led by senior forward Jalen Voss (Worthington, Minn.) who scored early and often for DWU. Voss finished with a game-high 25 points on 11-of-21 shooting and grabbed 10 rebounds for the double-double.
Junior guard Trae Bergh (Crooks, S.D.) added 18 points on 5-of-10 shooting, while junior forward Jade Miller (Mitchell, S.D.) came off the bench to score 17, including three triples. Senior guard Joey Mitchell (Tulare, S.D.) chipped in with 13 points and three 3-pointers.
The Tigers shot 29-of-58 from the field and 11-of-28 from deep, while outrebounding the Red Raiders 33-31.
The Red Raiders got 17 points apiece from Colton Kooima and Bryce Moss, while Nathan Wedel added 10 points and four rebounds. Northwestern shot 35-of-61 from the field and 6-of-11 from behind the 3-point line.
The Tigers look to close out a GPAC regular-season crown with two games at home starting with a matchup against Hastings College at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Corn Palace in Mitchell, S.D.
