No. 10 Tigers topple Mustangs in season opener
MITCHELL, S.D. – Reigning Great Plains Athletic Conference Freshman of Year, Ty Hoglund (Dell Rapids, S.D.) put the Dakota Wesleyan University men’s basketball team in the driver’s seat on Friday night, defeating Sisseton Wahpeton College 118-70 at the Corn Palace in Mitchell.
MITCHELL, S.D. – Reigning Great Plains Athletic Conference Freshman of Year, Ty Hoglund (Dell Rapids, S.D.) put the Dakota Wesleyan University men's basketball team in the driver's seat on Friday night, defeating Sisseton Wahpeton College 118-70 at the Corn Palace in Mitchell.
In 26 minutes of action, Hoglund registered 28 points, six assists and five rebounds to propel the highly-potent Tiger offense to victory.
DWU ultimately opened up the game with a 13-4 run to take a 25-9 lead thanks to back-to-back 3-pointers by Trae Vandeberg (Madison, S.D.) and Hoglund. Midway through the first half, Hoglund nailed three 3-point shots in a row to extend the Tiger lead to 15 points. The Tiger offense picked up right where they left off from a season ago as they scored 58 points in the first half and held the Mustangs to 33 points.
The second half saw much of the same as the Tigers continued to score and distribute the ball. The Mustangs came within 20 points in the second half, but could not narrow the margin as the Tiger offense proved to be too much.
Vandeberg added 20 points and five rebounds. Newcomer Tyson Smiley (Omaha, Neb.) pitched in 17 points, five rebounds and five assists off the bench in 20 minutes of play, while Kellen Barden (Whitewood, S.D.) tallied nine points.
As a team, the Tigers shot 48 percent from 3-point range and 61 percent from the field. DWU found the open man as they finished with 29 assists and out-rebounded the Mustangs, 51-24.
The Tigers return to action against future GPAC member, the University of Jamestown at 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Corn Palace in Mitchell.
