No. 10 Tigers outshoot Jimmies

MITCHELL, S.D. – The No. 10 Dakota Wesleyan University Men's basketball team secured their second victory of the season against future Great Plains Athletic Conference team, the University of Jamestown, 95-80 Tuesday at the Corn Palace in Mitchell.

 The defense shined early on for the Tigers (2-0) as they held Jamestown off the scoreboard for the opening five minutes of the contest, while opening up a 10-0 lead.

 The Jimmies (4-1) weathered the slow start and made it a five-point game following a made jump shot midway through the first half. However, Ty Hoglund (Dell Rapids, S.D.), Collin Kramer (Volga, S.D.) and Trae Vandeberg (Madison, S.D.) would each drill a 3-point shot in a span of two minutes that extended the DWU lead to 23-11.

 With just over six minutes remaining in the first half, senior Jason Spicer (Sioux Falls, S.D.) made his presence known as he contributed 10 of DWU's 14 final points in the half to help the Tigers take a 52-33 lead heading to the break.

 Spicer began the second half similar to how he finished the first half as he scored the first seven points for DWU after nailing a 3-point shot to give the Tigers a 22-point lead.

 Hoglund and Nygel Drury (Madison, Wis.) joined the party as they each added a 3-pointer to extend the DWU lead. The Tigers built on their lead as it grew to 32 points midway through the second half.

 The Jimmies chipped away at the DWU lead until the 32-point margin was cut to a 12-point lead with two minutes left in the game. However, the Tigers were able to fend off Jamestown and pick up their second win of the season.

 Spicer tallied 25 points, eight rebounds and four assists, as Hoglund added 22 points and six assists. Vandeberg came up just shy of a double-double with 19 points and nine rebounds, while Drury pitched in 13 points. The Tigers shot 51 percent from the field and held the Jimmies to 43 percent.

 DWU competes in the NAIA South Dakota Classic against Presentation College at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, S.D.
