No. 19 DWU routs Doane with second-half surge

CRETE, Neb. – The No. 19 Dakota Wesleyan University men's basketball team overpowered Doane University on both ends of the court on their way to a 94-64 victory in a Great Plains Athletic Conference road contest Saturday in Crete, Neb.

 Ty Hoglund (Dell Rapids, S.D.) started the scoring for DWU with a 3-pointer in the first two minutes of the game. Trailing 9-7, sophomore forward Collin Kramer (Volga, S.D.) drained a three-point shot to give the Tigers (17-7, 7-5 GPAC) their first lead of the game.

 After Doane (11-12, 5-7 GPAC) regained the lead moments later, DWU went on a 12-2 run, capped off by another Kramer 3-pointer. With under six minutes remaining in the first half, Doane nailed a three-point shot to make it a six-point game. However, less than a minute later DWU extended their lead to 13 points thanks to a jump shot by Jason Spicer (Sioux Falls, S.D.), a layup from Hoglund and a 3-pointer by Trae Vandeberg (Madison, S.D.).

 With less than three minutes to play in the half, Tyson Smiley (Omaha, Neb.) knocked in back-to-back layups followed by a Spicer three-point shot to give the Tigers a 43-28 lead at the break.

 Hoglund came out of the locker room in the second half scoring 10 of DWU's first 12 points, giving the Tigers a 20-point lead. Later in the half, Kramer connected on another 3-pointer, while minutes later, Vandeberg knocked in a pair of three-point shots to give DWU a 36-point lead down the stretch.

 Hoglund scored 27 points on 4-of-9 shooting from beyond the arc and grabbed six rebounds to lead the team. Spicer tallied 22 points, six rebounds and six assists, while Vandeberg notched 20 points and four assists. Kramer and Kellen Barden (Whitewood, S.D.) each added nine points. DWU shot 60 percent from the field and 50 percent from three-point range. The Tigers scored 20 points off turnovers compared to five by Doane and recorded 15 assists to seven assists by Doane.

 DWU returns home to play Hastings College in a GPAC bout at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Corn Palace in Mitchell, S.D.
