Mitchell, S.D. – Dakota Wesleyan men's basketball dropped a tough one at home Wednesday evening after going six and a half minutes before getting their first basket to open the game.

How It Happened

  • The Mustangs quickly jumped out to a 9-0 lead after the first six and a half minutes into the game.
  • Koln Oppold put the Tigers on the board with two points, followed by a three-pointer, cutting the Morningside lead 9-5.
  • With 11-minutes remaining in the first half, DWU grabbed their first lead 11-9; Oppold had eight of the teams 11 total points up to this point after the made shot from deep by Mason Larson.
  • Morningside quickly diminished the Dakota Wesleyan lead and flipped the score as they led 20-13 with eight minutes left in the opening half.
  • Nearing the five-minute mark, Oppold cut the Mustangs lead to four after another made shot from beyond the arc.
  • DWU climbed within five points after Teegan Evers made a three-point basket with three-minutes left.
  • Oppold; once again hit another shot beyond the arc with 60-seconds left in the first half, cutting the Morningside lead 35-28 heading into halftime.
  • After 20-minutes of play, Oppold had 17 points of his own while Sawyer Schultz, Larson, and Evers each had three.
  • Dakota Wesleyan came out in the second half, grabbing six points quickly from Larson as the Tigers now trailed by one 35-34 just a mere 45-seconds in.
  • Jeffrey Schuch brought the lead back to DWU after a layup with 16:17 left to play in regulation.
  • Schultz cut the Mustangs lead on back-to-back trips down the floor 41-41 then again, 44-43.
  • Heading into the final ten minutes of the second half, DWU trailed by one 50-49 after Larson converted on one of two free throws.
  • Morningside did not allow Dakota Wesleyan to close the gap again or regain the lead for the remainder of the game as the closest DWU came was 68-62 with 90-seconds left.
  • DWU tallied one more basket in the game, for the final score Morningside 73 DWU 65.
  • Overall, the Tigers shot 41.8% from the field, 41% beyond the arc, and 60% at the charity stripe.
  • The Mustangs shot 40.3% from the floor, 16.7% from deep, and 65.6% at the foul line in the game.
  • DWU outrebounded Morningside 34-33 and in points off the bench 8-3.
