Gomez welcomes nine signees to 2017 class
MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University men’s and women’s golf teams will see nine new faces when the 2017-18 golf season begins in the fall with three athletes signing for the women’s team and six signing for the men’s team.
MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University men's and women's golf teams will see nine new faces when the 2017-18 golf season begins in the fall with three athletes signing for the women's team and six signing for the men's team.
"With the amount of seniors graduating, it has been difficult to recruit numbers," Head Coach Chris Gomez said. "I am very pleased about the size and talent of my men's class and very pleased about the talent and attitude of the women's class."
Brooke Ehlers, Worthing, S.D.
Ehlers attended Canton High School where she golfed for six years. Each year she has improved at the State A Golf Tournament from a 55th place finish her freshman year to a third place finish last season. The same is to be said in conference play as she placed 12th in 2014 and finished fifth in the 2016 Conference Tournament. She also took first place in the Sioux Falls Junior City Tournament in 2016 and was the SEJC Champion in 2014.
Kaleigh Erdahl, Plankinton, S.D.
Erdahl is another local talent from Plankinton, S.D. She finished third in her region and 25th at the State B Golf Tournament with a stroke average of 95 during her junior season. The five-year letterwinner participated in the state golf tournament for four years and was named most improved golfer her eighth-grade year.
Skylar Brunk, Lee's Summit, Mo.
The third golfer to sign to the women's team is Skylar Brunk from Lee's Summit, Mo. Brunk set a nine-hole and 18-hole record shooting 35 and 76, respectively. She qualified for the state golf tournament four times during her career, with a 13th and sixth-place finish. Brunk was named to the All-Conference and All-District teams four times and earned All-State honors twice.
Cade Carpenter, Mitchell, S.D.
Mitchell, S.D., native, Cade Carpenter joins the Tigers after a decorated four-year career. He averaged a score of 76 with six top-five finishes during his senior year. The two-year team captain was named All-Conference three times and All-State once. Carpenter was a member of the SDGA Junior Tour for six years. He also knocked in a hole-in-one at age 11.
Jamie McGowan, Jr., White River, S.D.
Jamie McGowan, Jr. golfed for the White River Tigers for three seasons with a State B Golf Tournament finish of 95th and was named Western Great Plains All-Conference once. McGowan finished top-five in the Philip and Wall Invites with an average score of 89. He received invites to the Western Great Plains Invite and Regional Invite twice.
Brett Storjohann, Elm Creek, Neb.
Brett Storjohann golfed for four years for Elm Creek Public High School in Elm Creek, Neb. He was a multi-sport athlete playing in football and basketball.
Wyatt Voelker, Newcastle, Wyo.
Wyatt Voelker competed for one season for Newcastle High School in Newcastle, Wyo. In one season he was named an All-State Golfer while finishing first in the Upton Invitational and second at the 2A State Golf Tournament. Voelker finished with an 85-stroke average.
Justice Morrison, Norris, S.D.
The school-record holder, Justice Morrison, adds depth to the golf team from Norris, S.D. He holds the school records for individual wins with six and a low score of 72. Morrison notched 30 top-10 finishes in his career and was the State B Golf Tournament Runner-Up in 2016. He helped the Tigers to two Region Championships while earning Conference MVP and Most Improved Golfer.
Alec Johnson, Tyndall, S.D.
The ninth signee to the Tiger golf team is Alec Johnson. The Tyndall, S.D., native made the State B Golf Tournament six years in a row. He placed 24th as a freshman, third as a sophomore, seventh as a junior and third as a team at the State Tournament. He participated in the SDGA Junior Tour for six years and was the 2016 SDGA Points Champion for the Southeast Region.
