MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University men's soccer team broke out with its first win in the Great Plains Athletic Conference against instate rival Mount Mary College Wednesday at the Pepsi-Cola Soccer Complex in Mitchell, S.D.
The Tigers got a pair of goals each from senior Adam Jahnel (Blair, Neb.) and sophomore Derek Brenner (Yankton, S.D.) in a 5-0 win over the Lancers. The win moves DWU to 4-10-1 overall and 1-5-1 in the GPAC.
The Tigers got the scoring going early against the Lancers when Jahnel took a feed from freshman Yoshi Kogiso (Cuernavaca, Mexico) in the fourth minute to put DWU up 1-0. The Tigers doubled their lead in the 10th minute when Brenner scored his first career goal on a laser from the top of the box. The goal was the first of Brenner's Tiger career.
DWU added to its advantage when Kogiso netted his team-high sixth goal of the season shortly after the break. Jahnel and Brenner each added a goal in the second half to put the game away.
Freshman goalkeeper Gaston Miteff (Berazategui, Argentina) recorded his first career shutout and second win of the season since taking over in net for senior Alex Nelson (Sioux Falls, S.D.). Throughout the second half of the season, Nelson has moved onto the field to play a crucial role in DWU offense. He had two assists in the win over the Lancers.
The Tigers continue GPAC play against Concordia University on Senior Day at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in Mitchell, S.D.
