DWU’s comeback bid falls short in overtime

YANKTON, S.D. – In their first road game of the season, the Dakota Wesleyan University men’s soccer team fell in overtime to in-state rival Mount Marty College, 2-1 in Yankton, S.D.

YANKTON, S.D. – In their first road game of the season, the Dakota Wesleyan University men's soccer team fell in overtime to in-state rival Mount Marty College, 2-1 in Yankton, S.D.

The Lancers (2-0) opened up the scoring with a goal in the 26^th-minute. The shots would not find the back of the net again until late in the game.

With time running out and the Tigers needing a score, Brandon Jahnel (Blair, Neb.) answered the call with a strike into the back of the net off the assist from Derek Brenner (Yankton, S.D.) to tie the game at one apiece.

Overtime would see a tough defensive effort from both sides until the Lancers broke the tie late in the second overtime period to take the thrilling victory, 2-1.

Andrew Luoma (Fairbanks, Alaska) finished with three shots and two shots on goal and Jahnel tallied a goal off one shot for the Tigers. Gaston Miteff (Berazategui, Argentina) added nine saves off 11 shots on goal. MMC finished with 16 shots compared to 13 by DWU.

The Tigers (1-2) are in action next against Central Christian College (Kan.) at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at the Pepsi-Cola Soccer Complex in Mitchell, S.D.
