MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University men's soccer team fell in a hard fought Great Plains Athletic Conference matchup to Northwestern College by a final score of 2-1 on Wednesday night in Mitchell.
The Red Raiders (9-4-2, 5-1-2 GPAC) came out of the gate hot offensively getting scoring chances and putting pressure on the DWU defense. The Tigers (4-9-1, 1-6-1 GPAC) weathered the storm defensively and got more opportunities offensively minutes before halftime, but both teams could not find the back of the net in the first 45 minutes of play.
Northwestern scored the first goal of the match in the 52nd minute, but the Tigers responded quickly in the 55th minute on a goal from Gage Pemberton (Overland Park, Kan.) as he received a beautiful feed from Cesar Tabares (Phoenix, Ariz.) to even the match at 1-1.
Both teams traded offensive chances late in the second half, but it was the Red Raiders who scored a goal in the 75th minute to give Northwestern the victory.
DWU fired 10 shots in the match as Tabares and Pemberton each finished with three shots. Oscar Molina (Gillette, Wyo.) notched two shots in the match, while John Sutherland (Hartlepool, England) and Tyler Anderson (Monticello, Minn.) each tallied a shot. Gaston Miteff (Buenos Aires, Argentina) got the start in the net for the Tigers as he collected 10 saves in the loss.
DWU will be back home to play Doane College at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Pepsi-Cola Soccer Complex in Mitchell.
