Tiger softball picks up two wins in Tucson
TUCSON, Ariz. – The Dakota Wesleyan University softball team made its annual trip south to compete in the Tucson Invitational from March 4-8 in Tucson, Ariz., playing six games in the last two days.

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Dakota Wesleyan University softball team made its annual trip south to compete in the Tucson Invitational from March 4-8 in Tucson, Ariz., playing six games in the last two days.
On Saturday, the Tigers lost 3-1 to Missouri Valley College, followed by a 3-0 defeat to Goshen College, while winning the finale over No. 23 Park University 9-5.
In the loss to Missouri Valley, Andriana Sprakel (Yankton, S.D.) led the Tiger offense with a triple, while Lorissa Loeppky (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada) and Alyssa Garcia (L.A. Verne, Calif.) added a hit. Loeppky took the loss on the mound after throwing six innings, allowing five hits, an earned run, while striking out five and walking two.
Against Goshen, Sierra Haage (Sioux Falls, S.D.) suffered the loss after tossing six innings, allowing two runs on seven hits, while striking out four and walking one. Haage, Claudia Nixon (Saunavon, Saskatchewan, Canada), Mikael Smith (Brandon, S.D.) and Amber Budmark (Sacramento, Calif.) recorded a hit in the loss.
In the final game of Day One, the Tigers upset No. 23 Park, backed by multiple-hit performances from, Paige Kinley (Worthington, Minn.), Melysia Ortega (West Covina, Calif.), Budmark and Elise Sutherland (Stansbury, Utah). Sprakel also hit a home run to give DWU the advantage in the night cap.
On Day Two, future Great Plains Athletic Conference member, University of Jamestown defeated DWU 13-10, while the Tigers fell 10-1 to Aquinas College, but picked up a 2-1 decision over in-state foe Presentation College.
Against Jamestown, Alize Martinez (Palmdale, Calif.) went 3-for-3 with two walks, while Kinley, Budmark and Sutherland added two hits apiece. Ortega added three RBIs after going 1-for-3.
Loeppky took the loss after tossing six and one-third innings, allowing five runs on 13 hits and walking three.
In the loss to Aquinas, Karly Severance (Las Vegas, Nev.) notched a home run, while Budmark and Haage added a hit. Haage suffered the loss, throwing four innings, allowing five runs on eight hits, while striking out three and walking one.
In the win over Presentation, Haage, Sprakel and Ortega notched doubles for DWU, while Loeppky added two hits. Haage picked up the win on the mound after tossing a complete game, allowing one run on five hits, while striking out seven and walking six.
The Tigers (3-11) take on the University of St. Francis at 3:30 p.m., Madonna University at 6 p.m. and Lawrence Tech University at 8 p.m. (MST) in Tucson.
