MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University softball team was back in action for its home opener against Presentation College on Sunday, taking Game One 5-3, while the Saints defeated the Tigers 10-1 in the finale at Dr. McWhirter Field in Mitchell, S.D.
The Tigers got on the board early in the first inning, thanks to a three-run home run by Amber Budmark (Sacramento, Calif.). DWU added a run in the second and the sixth to secure the victory. In the top of the fifth, Sierra Haage (Sioux Falls, S.D.) worked out of a bases-loaded jam as she tossed seven innings, allowing three runs on 10 hits, while striking out eight and walking two.
Melysia Ortega (West Covina, Calif.) and Lorissa Loeppky (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada) added two hits, while Loeppky pitched in an RBI and a walk.
Game Two didn't go quite as planned for DWU. After giving up four runs in the third and two in fourth, sixth and seventh, the Saints' defense kept the Tigers at bay for much of the game.
Paige Kinley (Worthington, Minn.) saw the ball well at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a run. Loeppky took the loss after tossing five and one-third innings, allowing seven runs on nine hits, while walking three and striking out two.
The Tigers (10-17) open GPAC play against Briar Cliff University at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Sioux City, Iowa.
