DWU splits with in-state rival in conference action
MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University softball team began a six-game home stand on Thursday afternoon. DWU split in Great Plains Athletic Conference action with Mount Marty College as the Tigers took Game One 7-5, while the Lancers took the finale 9-7 at Dr. McWhirter Field in Mitchell, S.D.

MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University softball team began a six-game home stand on Thursday afternoon. DWU split in Great Plains Athletic Conference action with Mount Marty College as the Tigers took Game One 7-5, while the Lancers took the finale 9-7 at Dr. McWhirter Field in Mitchell, S.D.
Clutch hitting propelled the Tigers to victory in Game One, when DWU exploded for four runs in the bottom of the third inning. DWU went on to tally three more runs in the bottom of the sixth to hold-off the Lancers.
Paige Kinley (Worthington, Minn.) continued her dominant performance at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two runs and two doubles. Alize Martinez (Palmdale, Calif.) and Elise Sutherland (Stansbury, Utah) added two hits.
Sierra Haage (Sioux Falls, S.D.) picked up the win after going the distance, tossing seven innings, allowing five earned runs off seven hits, while striking out six and walking five.
In Game Two, the Tigers took a 6-1 lead into the fifth inning, but the Lancers had other ideas as they tallied six runs in the fifth and two more in the ninth to earn the split in the nightcap.
Karly Severance (Las Vegas, Nev.) was the lone Tiger with a multi-hit performance, going 2-for-2 with an RBI.
Lorissa Loeppky (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada) suffered the loss after tossing four innings, allowing three earned runs off five hits, while striking out three and walking three.
DWU (12-23, 2-4 GPAC) welcomes Concordia University for a GPAC doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday in Mitchell, S.D.
