DWU softball drops a pair to in-state rival
MADISON, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University softball team stepped out of conference play and battled in-state foe Dakota State University on Tuesday in Madison, S.D. The Trojans took game one 7-4 and the finale 5-3 at the Thue Softball Complex.

MADISON, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University softball team stepped out of conference play and battled in-state foe Dakota State University on Tuesday in Madison, S.D. The Trojans took game one 7-4 and the finale 5-3 at the Thue Softball Complex.
DSU tallied four runs in the first inning to keep the Tigers out of reach in game one, despite two runs in the third and a run in the fourth and fifth innings from DWU.
Karly Severance (Las Vegas, Nev.) powered DWU at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a run. Paige Kinley (Worthington, Minn.) was 2-for-4 with a double, a run and an RBI, while Elise Sutherland (Stansbury, Utah) added a double. Alize Martinez (Palmdale, Calif.) went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI in the loss.
Sierra Haage (Sioux Falls, S.D.) took the loss after tossing two innings in relief, allowing three earned runs on four hits, while walking a batter.
In the finale, the Tigers led 1-0, but not for long after a four-run second inning by DSU put the Tigers at bay for much of the game.
Severance added two hits, including a double, while Kinley tallied two hits, a double and a run. Melysia Ortega (West Covina, Calif.) went 2-for-4, while Amber Budmark (Sacramento, Calif.) and Katelyne Dougherty (Maui, Hawaii) each tallied a double in the loss.
Freshman Andrea Konz (Mitchell, S.D.) took the loss in the pitcher's circle after tossing two and one-third innings, allowing three earned runs on two hits, while walking three and striking out one.
The Tigers (12-27, 2-6 GPAC) visit Briar Cliff University for a Great Plains Athletic Conference doubleheader Thursday at 3 p.m. in Sioux City, Iowa.
