DWU softball begins conference play
CRETE, Neb. – The Dakota Wesleyan University softball team began Great Plains Athletic Conference play against Doane University as they dropped the first game, 11-1, and won the second game, 7-2 Saturday in Crete, Neb.

CRETE, Neb. – The Dakota Wesleyan University softball team began Great Plains Athletic Conference play against Doane University as they dropped the first game, 11-1, and won the second game, 7-2 Saturday in Crete, Neb.
Defense was at the forefront of the contest as neither team scored through the first three and a half innings. In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Tigers of Doane University (18-11, 2-1 GPAC) got their bats going as they added 11 runs. In the top of the fifth inning, the Tigers of Dakota Wesleyan (5-15, 1-1 GPAC) secured a run. However, that was not enough as DWU fell to Doane in the first game of the day.
Andrea Konz (Mitchell, S.D.) went 1-for-2, while Andriana Sprakel (Yankton, S.D.) went 1-for-3 at the plate. Konz was tabbed with the loss after pitching three and two-third innings.
In the second game, Doane put up the first run of the game in the second inning. DWU answered with a seven-run fourth inning. The scoring was led by a two-run double by Konz and two RBIs by Melysia Ortega (West Covina, Calif.) that helped push the Tigers to a victory in the second game of the day.
Ortega finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBIs, as Konz went 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Sprakel also finished 2-for-4 with an RBI. Sierra Haage (Sioux Falls, S.D.) picked up the victory on the mound as she pitched seven innings, striking out a batter and allowing two earned runs.
DWU takes on Dordt College in a GPAC battle beginning at 5 p.m. on April 3 in Mitchell, S.D.
