DWU softball drops pair of games to Mustangs
SIOUX CITY, Iowa – The Dakota Wesleyan University softball team dropped a pair of games against No. 25 Morningside College as they fell 9-5 in the first game and 8-6 in extra innings in the second game Thursday in Sioux City, Iowa.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – The Dakota Wesleyan University softball team dropped a pair of games against No. 25 Morningside College as they fell 9-5 in the first game and 8-6 in extra innings in the second game Thursday in Sioux City, Iowa.
In the first game, it was the Mustangs (15-8, 3-1 GPAC) who got on the scoreboard first thanks to a four-run first inning. However, in the second inning Stephanie Gabel (Sioux Falls, S.D.) smacked a two-run double into center field. Three batters later, Amber Budmark (Sacramento, Calif.) singled into left field, bringing another run home. Morningside added a run in the third inning and three runs in the fourth to extend its lead over the Tigers and win the first game.
Budmark led the way as she finished 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Gabel went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run. Andriana Sprakel (Yankton, S.D.) went 1-for-4 with an RBI and Sierra Haage (Sioux Falls, S.D.) finished the game 2-for-4 with an RBI. Andrea Konz (Mitchell, S.D.) was tabbed with the loss as she pitched three innings and allowed four hits.
In the second game, the Mustangs added a run in each of the first three innings to take a 3-0 lead. The Tigers (5-17, 1-3 GPAC) added two runs thanks RBI singles by Melysia Ortega (West Covina, Calif.) and Karly Severance (Las Vegas, Nev.). Sprakel tied the game in the next inning as she hit a sacrifice fly to right field, bringing Gabel home.
In the fifth inning, DWU took the lead after back-to-back homeruns by Budmark and Haage. An inning later the Tigers added another run to take a 6-3 lead. But, Morningside sent the game into extra innings after hitting a three-run homerun over the center-field fence. The Mustangs went one two win the game in the ninth inning.
Sprakel finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Ortega went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Budmark also went 1-for-5 with an RBI, while Haage finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run. Haage pitched nine innings after striking out 10 batters.
The Tigers are set to host GPAC foe Hastings College at 1 p.m. Saturday in Mitchell.
