DWU splits with Dordt in home finale
MITCHELL, S.D. – In their final home doubleheader of the season, the Dakota Wesleyan University softball team split with Dordt College in Great Plains Athletic Conference action as DWU won the first game 4-1, and dropped the second game 9-2, Thursday in Mitchell.

MITCHELL, S.D. – In their final home doubleheader of the season, the Dakota Wesleyan University softball team split with Dordt College in Great Plains Athletic Conference action as DWU won the first game 4-1, and dropped the second game 9-2, Thursday in Mitchell.
The Tigers (14-22, 10-8 GPAC) scored first as Alyssa Garcia (L.A. Verne, Calif.) knocked an RBI single into centerfield. After a scoreless third inning, the Defenders (21-17, 10-8 GPAC) tied the game with a sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth. DWU added three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning after a fielding error by the right fielder allowed for three runs to come in to score, as the Tigers took the first game.
Garcia went 1-for-3 with an RBI, as Stephanie Gabel (Sioux Falls, S.D.) tallied three RBIs. Andriana Sprakel (Yankton, S.D.) and Paige Kinley (Worthington, Minn.) finished the game 1-for-3 at the plate with a run scored. Freshman Alyson VanderPol (Mitchell, S.D.) pitched the complete game as she struck out a batter and only allowed four hits.
In the second game, Dordt wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as they posted four runs in the first inning. Three innings later, the Defenders added two more runs to take a 6-0 lead. After Dordt took a 9-0 lead followed three runs in the top of the fifth inning, the Tigers narrowed the margin at 9-2. Sprakel hit an RBI single as Mikael Smith (Brandon, S.D.) scored on a Dordt error. Two batters later, Chaydon Metzger (Larchwood, Iowa) smacked a hit to right field that plated a runner.
However, neither team scored in the final two innings as Dordt won the second game of the doubleheader. Sprakel finished 1-for-4 with an RBI, while Regan Nebel (Hayti, S.D.) went 2-for-2 at the plate. Devany Farris (Cheyenne, Wyo.) was tabbed with the loss as she pitched four and two-third innings, striking out three batters and allowing eight earned runs.
DWU concludes the regular season against the College of Saint Mary in a GPAC showdown at 1 p.m. Saturday in Omaha, Neb.
