Three big games lead Sabers to GPAC POTW

MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University women's basketball team is off to a strong start in 2015-16 and the play of junior forward Kristin Sabers has been a big part of DWU's success.

Sabers led the Tigers to three wins last week, including a victory over instate rival Mount Marty College in a Great Plans Athletic Conference matchup at the Corn Palace.

For her performance last week, Sabers was named the GPAC Women's Basketball Player-of-the-Week, the league announced Tuesday.

The Mitchell, S.D., native averaged 22.3 points in three games last week, while shooting 24-of-42 from the field and 10-of-17 from behind the 3-point line. She was also 9-of-10 from the free-throw line. Sabers posted a season-high 28 points against Oglala Lakota College on Saturday in Hastings, Neb. In just 14 minutes against the Bravehearts, Sabers was 10-of-13 from the field and 6-of-6 from deep. The Tigers set a new team record for points scored in a game with 126 in win over OLC. The previous record was 116, set in 2011-12.

Sabers added a 20-point performance in a big GPAC win over Mount Marty, while pouring in 19 poinst in a winning effort over Southwestern College (Kan.) Friday in Hastings.

In nine games this season, Sabers is averaging 15.1 points, while hitting 44.5 percent of her shots. She is also averaging 4.6 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game.

The Tigers are 8-1 overall and 2-1 in the GPAC. DWU heads back to GPAC play against Dordt College at 6 p.m. Wednesday in Sioux Center, Iowa.
