Second quarter surge lifts No. 3 Tiger women over Wildcats

DENVER – After holding Johnson and Wales University to only six points in the second quarter, the No. 3 Dakota Wesleyan University women's basketball team pummeled the Wildcats 100-49 in non-conference action on Thursday in Denver.

 The Tigers were off and running after junior Shanna Selby (Faith, S.D.) scored the first points of the season on a three-point basket. DWU's offensive firepower and deep bench saw the Tigers lead jump to 27 points heading into halftime.

 DWU would go on to score 29 points in the third quarter and 23 in the fourth, holding the Wildcats to just 28 points in the entire second half. The Wildcats went on to shoot 32 percent from the field, thanks to a solid defensive performance by the Tigers.

 Freshman guard Kynedi Cheeseman (Alexandria, S.D.) get her number called early in the contest, banking a three-pointer for her first points in a Tiger uniform. Cheeseman went on to score 13 points in the contest. DWU was led by Ashley Bray (Anoka, Minn.) as she recorded 14 points, while grabbing five rebounds. Twin sister Amber Bray (Anoka, Minn.) added 12 points and six rebounds, while Erica Herrold (Dimock, S.D.) and Mikaela Stofferahn (Dell Rapids, S.D.) tallied 11 points apiece.

 The Tigers shot 53 percent from the field, 40 percent from beyond the arc and 89 percent from the free throw line.

 DWU (1-0) hits the road for a closed-door exhibition against NCAA Division I, the University of Wyoming at 2 p.m. Friday in Laramie, Wyo.
