Cheeseman ties school record as Tigers cruise over Saints

ABERDEEN, S.D. – It was a record-setting night for sophomore guard Kynedi Cheeseman (Alexandria, S.D.) as she tied a school record with eight three-point field goals made as she helped propel the No. 6 Dakota Wesleyan University women's basketball team over Presentation College 101-49 Wednesday in Aberdeen, S.D.

 Cheeseman got off to a hot start as she nailed back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Tigers (8-1, 2-1 GPAC) a 9-3 lead in the opening minutes of the first quarter.

 Minutes later Chesney Nagel (Springfield, S.D.) drove to the basket and made a layup, forcing Presentation to call a timeout.

 Coming out of the timeout, DWU continued their hot shooting as they ended the first quarter with a 26-7 lead after shooting 56 percent and holding the Saints to 16 percent shooting from the field.

 In the second quarter, the defense of the Tigers complimented their impressive shooting on the offensive end. DWU only allowed two field goals made in the second quarter by the Presentation offense.

 With the first half coming to a close, Cheeseman nailed a 3-pointer to give the Tigers a 54-17 lead heading into halftime.

 The large lead continued to grow throughout the third quarter for DWU. The Tigers lead grew to as many as 47 points in the closing moments of the third quarter following a Jessica Mieras (Sioux Falls, S.D.) layup as time expired.

 The fourth quarter saw much of the same as the Tigers continued to overpower Presentation on both ends of the court on their way to victory.

 Along with tying a school record, Cheeseman added career highs with 12 three-point field goals attempted, seven defensive rebounds and eight total rebounds. She finished the game with 28 points, eight rebounds and three assists. Sarah Carr (Huron, S.D.) and Makaela Karst (Plankinton, S.D.) tallied 17 points each, while Mieras added 10 points off the bench.

 DWU shot 62 percent shooting from the field and 50 percent from three-point range, while holding the Saints to 24 percent from the field and 15 percent from beyond the arc. The Tigers finished with 24 assists to seven assists by Presentation.

 DWU returns home for a GPAC battle against Doane University at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Corn Palace in Mitchell, S.D.
