No. 2 Tigers lose exhibition matchup to No. 13 Iowa

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The No. 2 Dakota Wesleyan University women's basketball team hit the road to take on NCAA Division I nationally ranked opponent No. 13 University of Iowa and dropped the exhibition game, 102-54 Tuesday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa.

 The Hawkeyes began the game quickly as they jumped out to a 12-0 lead in the first three minutes of play. Madison Mathews (Draper, S.D.) got the Tigers on the scoreboard with a 3-pointer moments later.

 With the first quarter winding down, DWU put together five-straight points capped off by a Sydney Halling (Harrisburg, S.D.) layup to make it an 18-10 game.

 Less than two minutes into the second quarter, Makaela Karst (Plankinton, S.D.) knocked down a mid-range jumper. 30 seconds later, Sarah Carr (Huron, S.D.) nailed a jump shot of her own followed by another shot from beyond the arc.

 Midway through the second period, Mathews knocked down another 3-pointer, as the defense forced a missed shot by Iowa. However, the Hawkeyes put together a run of their own before halftime to take a 52-25 lead.

 After Iowa made a layup to begin the second half, Carr went on a 5-0 run by herself, followed by a Kynedi Cheeseman (Alexandria, S.D.) 3-pointer to kickstart the DWU offense.

 Less than five minutes into the third quarter, Karst joined the action as she found the bottom of the net from beyond the arc, while Rylie Osthus (De Smet, S.D.) added a jump shot on the following possession.

 Carr kicked off the fourth quarter with a layup, as Osthus chipped in a jump shot. But, the scoring was not enough as the Tigers dropped the exhibition to the Hawkeyes.

 Carr led DWU with 16 points and seven rebounds, while Mathews added nine points. Cheeseman tallied eight points, six rebounds and five steals, as Karst notched seven points, three rebounds and three assists.

 The Tigers return home to battle Great Plains Athletic Conference foe, No. 8 Northwestern College at 6 p.m. tomorrow at the Corn Palace in Mitchell.
