Weidler headlines DWU All-GPAC honorees
MITCHELL, S.D. – For the first time since the 2014 season, the Dakota Wesleyan University women’s soccer team landed a player on the All-GPAC First Team in junior Alyssa Weidler (Sioux Falls, S.D.), as the women’s team finished with three All-Conference players and the men’s team landed two players on the All-GPAC team, it was announced by the conference Monday.
MITCHELL, S.D. – For the first time since the 2014 season, the Dakota Wesleyan University women's soccer team landed a player on the All-GPAC First Team in junior Alyssa Weidler (Sioux Falls, S.D.), as the women's team finished with three All-Conference players and the men's team landed two players on the All-GPAC team, it was announced by the conference Monday.
Weidler joins her sister, Sarah Weidler, and seven other DWU women's soccer players on the All-GPAC First Team in program history. She finished her junior campaign leading the team with 16 goals on the season. Weidler also led the conference in goals per game with 0.94 goals per contest and was tied for first in total goals.
She recorded her best game of the season against Waldorf University as she tallied four goals on six shots on goal. Weidler currently has 29 goals in her career, only nine goals away from tying the program record for most goals in a career.
Joining her on the All-Conference team is Brooke Forsman (Sioux Falls, S.D.) and Stephanie Banvelos (Hayward. Calif.) as they were tabbed to the Honorable Mention Team. Forsman proved to be a defensive leader for the Tigers in her senior season. She played in 15 games and started in 14 games. Forsman finished the season with three shots and a shot on goal.
Banvelos was a steady player for DWU on defense as she played in 17 games and started in 16 games. She finished the season with 18 shots and seven shots on goal, while adding an assist.
For the DWU men's soccer team, seniors John Sutherland (Hartlepool, England) and Gaston Miteff (Berazategui, Argentina) were each named to the All-GPAC Honorable Mention Team.
In his final season, Sutherland started each of the 17 games for DWU at midfield. He notched eight shots, three shots on goal and a goal throughout the year. Miteff started in 12 games this season as he recorded 95 saves on the year, good for third in the conference. He also tallied 7.9 saves per game, which was second in the GPAC and ninth in the NAIA. Miteff concluded his career with 406 saves and five shutouts.
The men finished the season with an overall record of 4-12-1, while the women recorded a 6-11 record overall.
