Tigers cruise over Waldorf

MITCHELL, S.D. – After defeating Waldorf University in a five-set thriller in the Red Raider Classic over the weekend, the Dakota Wesleyan University volleyball team took care of business on Tuesday night at the Corn Palace in Mitchell, downing the Warriors in straight sets.

 Set scores were 25-13, 25-18 and 25-16.

DWU took a demanding eight-point lead in the first set, thanks to three straight errors by Waldorf. The Tigers were able to put the set away early on back-to-back kills by Emily Brunsing (Wagner, S.D.) and Sydney Fritz (Winner, S.D.)

The Warriors hung around in set two, but a kill from setter Bridgett Knobbe (Norfolk, Neb.) gave the Tigers a seven-point cushion, putting the set out of reach for Waldorf.

In the final set, a Rebecca Frick (Yankton, S.D.) kill and an error by the Warriors pushed the Tiger lead to seven. DWU went on to take a 10-point lead after back-to-back errors by Waldorf, and the Tigers never looked back as Frick put the set away with a convincing kill, giving DWU its fourth win of the season.

Frick tallied nine kills and 12 digs, while Knobbe added 25 assists and six digs. Fritz recorded seven kills and freshman Sara Herman (Reliance, S.D.) pitched in 11 digs.

The Tigers (4-2) take on Grace University in the Corn Palace Classic at 6 p.m. on Friday in Mitchell.
