
YANKTON, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University volleyball team battled all night and came out on top in a five-set thriller on Tuesday night against Mount Marty College in Great Plains Athletic Conference action in Yankton, S.D.
Set scores were 15-25, 25-20, 25-21, 20-25 and 15-6.
Sophomore Rebecca Frick (Yankton, S.D.) had another career night in just her second year in a Tiger uniform. Frick recorded 15 kills and 26 digs in the five-set affair.
Despite dropping set one, the Tigers cruised to a six-point lead in set two, thanks to two kills by Frick and Kimberly VanBockern (Arlington, S.D.) and an error by the Lancers. Freshman Chelsey Heeg (Freeman, S.D.) made her mark known in only her 10th game for the Tigers. Heeg ultimately tallied the last point for DWU in the second set. Heeg went on to tally 13 kills and six digs for the Tigers.
Set three was nearly point for point, however back-to-back kills by Frick gave the Tigers a five-point lead. Sophomore Sydney Fritz (Winner, S.D.) put the set away for DWU after the Lancers came within three points of the Tigers.
After the Lancers took set four, it was all DWU, storming out to a five-point lead early in the set. Three back-to-back errors by MMC put the set out of reach for the home team.
Fritz added nine kills, while VanBockern had six. Emily Brunsing (Wagner, S.D.) tallied eight kills and five block assists. Freshman Bridgett Knobbe (Norfolk, Neb.) pitched in 49 assists, while Sara Herman (Reliance, S.D.) had 25 digs.
The Tigers (7-3, 1-0 GPAC) hit the road to compete in the College of Saint Mary Tournament, taking on Waldorf University at 2 p.m. and Mayville State University at 6 p.m. Friday in Omaha, Neb.
