Tigers split in triangular on Saturday

MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University volleyball team hosted York College and Presentation College for a triangular, as DWU split the games Saturday at the Corn Palace.

 In the first game of the day, the Tigers (10-2) downed York in straight sets, 25-17, 25-9, 25-15. 

 DWU jumped out to an early 8-3 lead thanks to a Sydney Fritz (Winner, S.D.) and Jennifer Schmidt (Tyndall, S.D.) block in the first set. The Tigers would go on to win the first set and take care of the Panthers (1-12).

 Leading the way was Sara Herman (Reliance, S.D.) who tallied 13 digs in the game. Rebecca Frick (Yankton, S.D.) finished with 14 kills and seven digs, while Fritz added seven kills and five digs.

 The second game of the day was a five-set thriller that Presentation would prevail from as they downed the Tigers 23-25, 25-9, 25-22, 10-25, 15-17.

 The opening set was closely contested as neither team took more than a three-point advantage. However, the Saints (7-4) fended off DWU in the first set. But, the Tigers would answer back as they dominated the second set, scoring 12-straight points to even the game.

 After each team split the next two sets, it came down to the fifth set. The Tigers held a 14-12 lead following an error by the Saints. However, Presentation tied the set at 14 and would steal the game from the Tigers.

 Frick finished the game with 22 kills and 20 digs, as Herman notched 24 digs. Bridgett Knobbe (Norfolk, Neb.) added 52 assists and 11 digs, while Schmidt tallied 10 kills and two digs and Madlyn Christiansen (Omaha, Neb.) recorded 14 digs.

 DWU returns to conference action against Briar Cliff University at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Sioux City, Iowa.
