Tigers concede five-set thriller to No. 14 Broncos

HASTINGS, Neb. – After splitting the first four set, the Dakota Wesleyan University volleyball team fell to No. 14 Hastings College in the fifth set in a Great Plains Athletic Conference game on Friday in Hastings, Neb.

 Set scores were: 26-28, 26-24, 13-25, 25-23, 11-15.

After splitting the first two sets, the Broncos (11-5, 6-3 GPAC) put a strangle hold on the game after winning the third set, 25-13. However, the Tigers (12-9, 2-7 GPAC) fought their way back in the fourth set in a tightly contested set.

With each neither team taking more than a three-point advantage, DWU pulled away to force a fifth set. In the final set, Hastings took an early 6-2 lead. But, the Tigers came back within a point after Chelsey Heeg (Freeman, S.D.) recorded a kill. It was not enough as the Broncos held on to defeat the Tigers in five sets.

Rebecca Frick (Yankton, S.D.) led the charge for DWU with 21 kills and 20 digs, as Bridgett Knobbe (Norfolk, Neb.) finished with 43 assists and 11 digs. Heeg tallied nine kills and five digs, while Emily Brunsing (Wagner, S.D.) notched eight kills, five digs and 2.5 blocks.

The Tigers take on Doane University in a GPAC battle at 5 p.m. tomorrow in Crete, Neb.
