ABERDEEN, S.D. – In the final day of the PC Dome Classic, the Dakota Wesleyan University softball team defeated Mayville State University 6-5, but dropped the contest against Dickinson State University 3-0 Saturday in Aberdeen, S.D.
Both teams scored in the first inning of the first game of the day, as Andriana Sprakel (Yankton, S.D.) scored for the Tigers following an error by the Comets to put DWU up 1-0. MSU took the lead in the bottom of the second inning with a pair of runs to hold a 3-1 advantage.
However, DWU regained the lead in the top of the fourth inning as Reagen Nebel (Hayti, S.D.) singled up the middle to bring a run home. The Comets tied the game in the bottom of the same inning with a run.
After MSU took a one-run lead in the fifth inning, Sierra Haage (Sioux Falls, S.D.) smacked a sacrifice fly to left field, bringing home Sprakel to tie the game again. The game headed to extra innings as neither team could take the lead. But, in the 10th inning Sprakel nailed a one-run homerun over the center field fence to give the Tigers the victory.
Sprakel led the way as she went 3-for-5 with an RBI, four runs and a homerun. Melysia Ortega (West Covina, Calif.) finished 1-for-3 with three RBIs, while Nebel went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Haage pitched all 10 innings as she tallied five strikeouts and allowed 11 hits.
In the second game of the day, Dickinson State tallied a run in the third, fourth and seventh innings to hold a 3-0 lead. The DWU offense could not get going in the final game of the weekend. In the third inning, Mikael Smith (Brandon, S.D.) hit a single down the left field line, while Chaydon Metzger (Larchwood, Iowa) reached base on a walk. However, the Tigers could not score as they lost the last game of the weekend.
Metzger went 2-for-2 at the plate, while Julia Kelley (Omaha, Neb.) finished 2-for-4. Alyson VanderPol (Mitchell, S.D.) was tabbed with the loss as she pitched four innings, struck out two batters and allowed three hits.
DWU returns to the diamond at the Tucson Invitational on March 3 in Tucson, Ariz.
