SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – After poor field conditions moved the home doubleheader out of Mitchell, the Dakota Wesleyan University softball team dropped two Great Plains Athletic Conference games to Dordt College, 7-0 in game one and 8-3 in the second game, Wednesday in Sioux Center, Iowa.
In the first game, the Defenders (10-9, 4-0 GPAC) posted a seven-run third inning to take a 7-0 lead. The Tigers (6-18, 1-3 GPAC) collected two hits in the fourth inning but could not push anything across home plate, as Dordt would go on to win game one.
Stephanie Gabel (Sioux Falls, S.D.) led the way for DWU going 3-for-3, while Alyson VanderPol (Mitchell, S.D.) and Karly Severance (Las Vegas, Nev.) each tallied a hit. Sierra Haage (Sioux Falls, S.D.) started in the circle, tossing seven innings and striking out six batters.
In game two, the Defenders jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top half of the third inning. The Tigers responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning, highlighted by a two-run double from VanderPol, followed by an RBI-single from Chaydon Metzger (Larchwood, Iowa) to cut the Dordt lead to one run.
Both teams would not be able to muster any runs until the top of the seventh inning, as the Defenders scored four runs to pull away late from DWU and completed the sweep.
VanderPol pitched all seven innings and went 2-for-3 at the plate and two runs batted in. Allison McElveny (Chula Vista, Calif.) finished with two hits, and Gabel tallied two hits in four at-bats.
The Tigers will battle GPAC foe Morningside College in a doubleheader Saturday at 12 p.m. in Aberdeen, S.D.
