MITCHELL, S.D. – Dakota Wesleyan University Director of Athletics Jon Hart announced Wednesday that Casey Mouw has been named the 12th head wrestling coach in DWU history.
Mouw brings a wide range of wrestling and coaching experience to DWU, including his most recent stint at Sioux Falls Roosevelt High School. While at Sioux Falls Roosevelt, he worked closely with some of the top finishers at the state wrestling tournaments. He worked primarily with upper-weight wrestlers from the 170-pound weight class to the 285-pound weight class.
Prior to coaching at Sioux Falls Roosevelt, Mouw was a strength and conditioning coach for the University of Northern Iowa Wrestling team while earning his Master's Degree in Physical Education and Exercise Science. He implemented preseason strength and conditioning programs for the wrestling program, while also creating a competitive training environment amongst the team in preparation to the 2014 and 2015 seasons.
"I'm incredibly grateful and excited for the opportunity to be the next head wrestling coach at Dakota Wesleyan University," Mouw said. "As a coach, an opportunity like this is always something I've thought about and I look forward to getting to work right away."
The Sioux Center, Iowa, native attended the United States Military Academy in 2006, while being a member of the Army wrestling team for one season. In 2007, he transferred to Augustana University in Sioux Falls, where he received his Bachelor's in fitness management and was a three-year member of a wrestling team that was the 2009-10 runner-up at the NCAA Division II National Tournament. During that time, he also assisted in coaching various Sioux Falls area prep wrestlers, including the 2008 South Dakota Jr. National dual team.
"We couldn't be more excited about adding Casey to our staff," Hart commented. "He brings a strong vision that aligns with our core values and goals for the program moving forward. His experiences and background in wrestling, strength, training and recruiting prospects ultimately separated him from our 50 plus candidates."
Outside of wrestling, Mouw has a diverse background in strength and conditioning. He began his business called, 605 Sports Performance in 2014, which is still thriving today. The business assessed sports acceleration development and training for 12-18 year old athletes. He taught the students and athletes the fundamental drills for speed, agility, strength and power development.
In 2011, Mouw became a full-time head coach at CrossFit of Sioux Falls. He has wrote various strength curriculums for advanced and specialized athletes, including challenges and seminars for members pertaining to nutrition and lifestyle improvements. Mouw created a general fitness template which is now followed by a membership of over 200 people, while also creating a four-week introduction to the CrossFit program. He also performed multiple clinics focusing on Olympic weightlifting, while interning with CrossFit's Olympic weightlifting Coaches Certification Seminar staff.
"Coach Mouw will work hard to re-establish a culture of competitiveness and discipline," Hart said. "He will ensure our student-athletes reach their full potential during their DWU careers."
Mouw has certifications as a CrossFit Level 1 Certified Trainer and a CrossFit Olympic Weightlifting Coach.
"I had a great feeling while taking a tour of campus, meeting with some of the team, and speaking with the search committee," Mouw said. "With the facilities and support around DWU athletics, I see many possibilities to build a program that the university and the whole community can be proud of."
