PERU, Neb. – The Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team got off to early leads in both games of a doubleheader on the road against Peru State College, but dropped both contests Sunday in Peru, Neb.
The Tigers opened game one up 4-1 in the second inning, but allowed 12 unanswered runs and fell 13-4. In the second game DWU scored four runs in the top of the first before falling 8-7. The losses drop DWU to an even 8-8 on the season as the Tigers get set to start the Great Plains Athletic Conference season.
In game one, DWU got two hits from senior catcher Ben Ladner (Delray Beach, Fla.), while junior Cole Wenande (Alexandria, S.D.), sophomore Chris Combs (Corvallis, Mont.) and sophomore Tyler Waddle (Huron, S.D.) each picked up an RBI. Sophomore Patrick Whetham (Garretson, S.D.) got the start on the mound for DWU, allowing eight runs, five earned on 12 hits, while striking out five.
After jumping out to a 4-0 lead in game two, the Tigers entered the top of the seventh inning down 8-5. DWU rallied with two runs and had the tying run at third with one out. The game ended with Ladner lining out to first and Joey Kinley flying out to right field, leaving the tying run stranded at third base.
Junior Dominic Sebastiani (San Francisco, Calif.) led the DWU offense with three doubles, two runs scored and two RBIs. Junior Neil Nagle (Oslo, Minn.) added two runs, one hit and an RBI. Junior Mike Kinzler (East Grand Forks, Minn.) took the loss on the mound, pitching five innings, allowing eight runs (seven earned) on 11 hits and struck out three.
DWU had eight hits and two errors in game one, while adding nine hits and two errors in the finale.
The Tigers open the GPAC season with a doubleheader against Northwestern College at 3 p.m. Friday at Cadwell Park in Mitchell, S.D.
