Association of Student-Athletes

What is ASA?

Association of Student-Athletes (ASA) is a leadership group consisting of student-athletes representing all sports at Dakota Wesleyan University. DWU ASA provides insight on the student-athlete experience and offers input on the rules, regulations and policies that effect student-athletes' lives on NAIA campuses. ASA members serve as a channel of communication among student-athletes, coaches and athletic administrators in an effort to improve the student-athlete experience and promote growth and education through sports participation.

Presently, the NAIA and GPAC are making a conscious effort to encourage more ASA groups at member institutions. In fact, last year the NAIA approved the first piece of legislation (Day-Off Resolution) that originated from the national ASA. NCAA legislation mandates that all member institutions have similar led student groups on their respective campuses.

Mission Statement and Purpose:

  • Enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting the student-athletes wellbeing and fostering a positive student-athlete image.
  • To encourage student-athlete involvement in campus and community projects.
  • To serve as a liaison among student-athletes, the athletic department and the campus community.
  • To promote optimal communication and relationships among all DWU athletic teams.

Responsibilities and Expectations:

  1. At all times, ASA members must keep their teams educated about relevant issues discussed during ASA meetings.
  2. Must act as leaders and liaisons within their teams.
  3. Must demonstrate punctuality in all forms of communication, inquiries and deadlines from ASA staff and members.
  4. An ASA advisory committee will elect new officers to fill any vacant position if the elected officer is unable to carry out his/her obligation. The only exception applies to the office of the president, in which case the vice president will assume the responsibility. Additionally, the president may appoint an interim secretary who will be responsible for filling the spot if the secretary is not present at a meeting.

The ASA team will meet once a month or as necessary. Attendance is mandatory unless prior notice is given for an excused absence.
