BROOKINGS, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team stepped out of Great Plains Athletic Conference play to take on South Dakota State University, an NCAA Division I program, in a doubleheader Wednesday in Brookings, S.D.
The Tigers held a 1-0 lead on the Jackrabbits into the fourth inning in game one when the home team scored five times. SDSU held on for the 5-1 win to open the doubleheader. The Jackrabbits exploded for 10 runs in the second inning of game two and topped the Tigers 13-6 to earn the sweep.
Sophomore Peyton Price (Norfolk, Neb.) got the Tigers on the board in the second inning of game one with an RBI single. The Tigers left two on base in the second, but held the 1-0 lead into the fourth, when SDSU scored all five of its runs. The first three batters of the inning reached, including two walks and a hit batter. Al Robbins doubled to drive in all three runners. SDSU would add two more in the inning.
DWU outhit SDSU 6-5, but could not bring another run across. The Jackrabbits scored two unearned runs on three Tiger errors.
Junior Logan Risse (Martin, S.D.) took the loss for the Tigers, allowing four runs, three earned, on three hits, while striking out three. Price and junior Dominic Sebastiani (San Francisco, Calif.) each finished with two hits for DWU.
In game two, freshman Braiden Jorgensen (Tetonia, Idaho) started for DWU, but did not reach the third inning. He allowed 11 runs, including seven earned on seven hits and struck out one. Senior Tyler Johnson (Elizabeth, Colo.), Sebastiani and sophomore Hartman Katz (Huron, S.D.) each picked up an RBI for the Tigers.
The Tigers (9-13) return to GPAC play against Briar Cliff University at 2 p.m. Thursday at Cadwell Park in Mitchell, S.D.
