DWU baseball power surge leads to sweep of Saints

ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team stepped out of conference play to take on instate opponent Presentation College in a doubleheader Wednesday in Aberdeen, S.D.

The Tigers came out swinging in game one, picking up a 9-3 win. The Tigers and Saints battled back and forth in game two, which went to extra innings. DWU scored four runs on a pair of homrers in the 10th to earn a 6-2 win for the sweep. The wins move DWU to 11-17 overall.

In game one, the Tigers got on the board early, plating two runs in the first inning. Sophomore Tyler Waddle (Huron, S.D.) singled in the first run for DWU, while sophomore Jared Neilan (Pierre, S.D.) crossed the plate on a wild pitch. DWU added five more in the fourth inning, including three off the bat off Neilan who singled with the bases loaded. After Waddle hit an RBI single, he came around to score on a double from junior Neil Nagle (Oslo, Minn.).

Up 9-0 in the seventh, the Tigers allowed the Saints to score three in their last at bat, but DWU closed the door to pick up the win and snap a six-game losing streak. Senior pitcher Joey Fitzgerald (Fairmont, Minn.) started for DWU, allowing no runs on one hit in two innings pitched. Neilan finished with two hits and three RBIs, while Waddle added two hits and two RBIs.

Game two started with each team plating a run in the first. DWU got on the board first when Waddle doubled home a run. The Tigers took a one-run lead for a second time in the sixth with Waddle again driving in a run. After the Saints pulled even with a run in the seventh, the score remained tied until the top of the 10th.

DWU broke through with four runs in the 10th on a pair of two-run home runs. Nagle and junior Cole Wenande (Alexandria, S.D.) each went deep to put DWU in front. Junior Alex McGuigan (Pierre, S.D.) pitched his third inning of relief in the bottom of the 10th to pick up the win.

DWU finished with 10 hits and two errors, while the Saints had six hits and four errors.

The Tigers return to conference play for a doubleheader against Nebraska Wesleyan University at 1 p.m. Saturday at Cadwell Park in Mitchell, S.D.
