HILLSBORO, Kan. – The Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team concluded its season-opening weekend series with No. 4 Tabor College in a doubleheader Saturday in Hillsboro, Kan.
Despite a furious rally in the first game of the doubleheader, DWU fell 8-7 in seven innings, while Tabor held the Tigers to one hit in the finale, topping Wesleyan 6-1. The losses drop DWU to 0-3 to start the 2016 season.
The Tigers fell behind 8-3 after three innings in the opening game of the day, but held the Blue Jays off the board the rest of the way, giving DWU a chance to make a comeback. The Tigers scored one in the fifth and three in the second, including the first home run of the season from junior catcher Sean Riley (Driggs, Idaho).
Senior Austin Calhoon (Winner, S.D.) opened the seventh inning with a double, but three straight fly outs put the game away for Tabor. Junior pitcher Patrick Whetham (Garretson, S.D.) started for the Tigers and took the loss, allowing eight runs, seven earned on 10 hits, including one home run in two and a third innings.
Senior Neil Nagle (Oslo, Minn.) finished with three hits in game one, while Calhoon added a two hits, including an RBI triple.
In game two, the Tabor pitching staff took over, allowing one hit in six innings. The lone Tiger knock came from senior shortstop Dominic Sebastiani (San Francisco, Calif.). Junior William Lutjen (Miller Place, N.Y.) started and took the loss for DWU, allowing six runs, three earned on three hits and four walks in three and a third innings.
The Tigers continue their early season road tour with a doubleheader against Grace University at 1 p.m. Saturday in Omaha, Neb.
