ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team continued its early season road tour with the first of two doubleheaders against No. 21 Missouri Baptist University Friday in St. Louis, Mo.
The Tigers hung close with the Spartans throughout the first game, but MBU scored three late to take the game 4-1. DWU's offense was held in check in game two, managing just three hits in an 8-0 loss. The sweep drops the Tigers to 0-5 to start the season.
Game one starter, junior Patrick Whetham (Garretson, S.D.) navigated the first four innings without allowing a run, but MBU tagged him for one in the fifth and two more in the sixth. Whetham (0-2) was charged with the loss, tossing five and third innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits, while striking out two.
Senior Austin Calhoon (Winner, S.D.) was the lone Tiger with two hits in game one, while adding a stolen base. Junior Peyton Price (Norfolk, Neb.) picked up DWU's only RBI.
Senior Dustin Steckler (Garretson, S.D.) took the loss in game two. Steckler (0-2) allowed seven runs, three earned, on eight hits, while striking out four in four innings pitched. Junior Jonah Johnson (Kerkhoven, Minn.) picked up a pair of singles at the plate for DWU.
The Tigers and Spartans hit the field for two more starting at Noon on Saturday.
