MADISON, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team traveled to take on in-state rival Dakota State University for a nonconference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon in Madison, S.D.
The Tigers (10-9) split with the Trojans (6-11), as DSU took game one 8-0. DWU got the bats going in the second game to come away with the 11-3 win.
In the opener, the Tigers were held to two hits, as senior Neil Nagle (Olso, Minn.) and Dominic Sabastiani (San Francisco, Calif.) picked up the lone knocks in the loss. The Trojans scored the first run in the bottom of the first, before adding seven runs in the fifth.
Dustin Steckler (Garretson, S.D.) took the loss on the mound after tossing four and one third innings, giving up five runs on two hits, while striking out three and walking four batters.
Game two was a different story for the Tigers, as DWU struck first in the top of the second with two runs, while adding two more in the fifth and sixth innings. DWU put the game away for good with five in the seventh.
Senior Austin Calhoon (Winner, S.D.) blasted a pair of home runs, sending the ball over the fence for a grand slam in the top of the seventh. He had a solo shot in the second inning and finished the day going 2-for-3 with five RBIs, while scoring three runs.
Starting catcher Tramane Moore (Los Banos, Calif.) and Chris Combs (Las Vegas, Nev.) added two hits apiece, while Nagle added a homer in the top of the sixth.
Daniel Galvez (San Francisco, Calif.) toed the rubber for the Tigers and picked up the win, throwing five innings, giving up a run on three hits, while striking out three batters.
The Tigers travel to take on Northwestern College (Iowa) for a nonconference doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Friday in Orange City, Iowa.
