MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team split a nonconference doubleheader with Presentation College Wednesday at Cadwell Park in Mitchell, S.D.
The Tigers took game one in walk-off fashion by the final of 5-4, and dropped game two 6-4.
In the bottom of the sixth of game one, the Tigers rallied back to tie the game at four apiece when junior Tyler Waddle (Huron, S.D.) scored on a wild pitch. In the seventh, Michael Johnson (Huron, S.D.) scored the walk-off run for DWU as the Saints' pitcher lost control with two more wild pitches.
Peyton Price (Norfolk, Neb.) led all hitters, going 3-for-4 at the plate, while adding an RBI and a run. Cole Wenande (Alexandria, S.D.) and Waddle added two hits each in the win.
Junior Steven Somerville (Ajax, Toronto, Canada) picked up the win on the hill after tossing two innings, allowing no runs on one hit.
DWU had the lead in game two into the fourth, but the Saints put up four in the top of the fifth, aided by a three-run double. Wenande was the lone Tiger with a multi-hit performance, going 2-for-3 with a triple, an RBI and a run.
Freshman Nathen Smith (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada) suffered the loss, tossing four and a third innings, giving up six runs on six hits, while striking out three and walking three.
The Tigers (16-13) hit the road for a Great Plains Athletic Conference doubleheader matchup to battle Northwestern College Friday at 5 p.m. in Orange City, Iowa.
