Midland turns two on DWU baseball in GPAC DH

MITCHELL, S.D. – The offensive firepower from the Midland University Warriors was too much for the Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team on Sunday in Mitchell.

Midland took the series sweep, defeating the Tigers in game one by the final of 12-9 and 16-3 in game two.

The Warriors scored first in game one with five runs in the top of the first, but the Tigers rebounded by adding six runs in the bottom of the third to take a one-run lead. As both teams scored a run in the fourth, it was Midland who came out on top by putting a five spot on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth.

DWU tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh as it scored two runs, but it wasn't enough as the Warriors secured game one, aided by five errors from the Tigers.

Jonah Johnson (Kerkhoven, Minn.) got the nod on the mound, but did factor in the decision. Johnson went 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and two runs. Starting catcher Sean Riley (Driggs, Idaho) added a double, going 1-for-4 with two RBIs.

Patrick Whetham (Garretson, S.D.) took the loss on the mound after tossing two innings, giving up two runs on five hits and a walk.

DWU struck first in game two, but it didn't last too long after the Warriors had two big innings in the fourth and sixth. Midland put up five runs in the fourth and seven in the sixth. Errors plagued the Tigers as they committed six costly mistakes. Senior Alex McGuigan (Pierre, S.D.) who took the loss in relief.

The Tigers (17-16, 3-5 GPAC) welcome Mayville State University to town for a nonconference doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Mitchell.
